Total budget of the project: 7 833 403,08 EUR / Requested EU contribution: 5 000 000,00 EUR

Project overview:

In the cross-border area the increasing amount of not properly managed waste constitute a serious risk to human health and to the environment, and that such risk cannot be contained satisfactorily by the present waste management methods. The existing problems with waste collection, recycling and disposal are acute. (Specially in the mountainous areas.) The pollution of the ground water and the river Tisza and its tributaries, which flow in Ukraine and in bordering countries – Slovakia and Hungary, indicate the need for a comprehensive approach to solving the problem of waste management in the cross-border area.
These problems highlight a fairly critical picture. Main specific objective of the project is reducing the risks caused by waste on the quality of waters and land. Reaching this goal can help in the environmentally sustainable development of the joint cross-border region on the external border of the EU, as the overall objective of the project.
The Project includes construction of landfills for the waste storage, purchase of equipment for the collection of waste, creation of a network of points for solid waste collection.
The Project’s aim is to establish a complex intervention and to establish a sustainable, environmentally conscious waste management system, that will handle the deeper problems, not just the problems surfaced.

As ZeroWaste is an integrated project, its implementation approach carries several cross-border characters: reduction of pollution in UA by establishment of waste management facilities and raising awareness for changing in attitude will help in reduction of pollution in HU as well (land and rivers are forming a ‘coherent area’ between the countries).
Raising awareness in the target area and communicating an environmentally conscious attitude among inhabitants will contribute to the long-term solution of the problem.

Specific objectives of project:

SO 1 Introduction of benchmarking-based, efficient and environmentally conscious EU-practices for waste management outside the EU external border. The landfill in Yanoshi (UA) will increase the recycling ratio of domestic waste, ensure a safe method of disposal and help in avoidance of pollution in the target area. Establishment of a waste management association in UA according to EU standards, is an important example for the introduction of benchmarking-based, efficient and environmentally conscious EU-practices.

SO 2 Reduction of waste-caused environmental risks on the quality of waters and land, by joint cross-border initiatives, knowledge transfer, benchmarking and coordinated investments. Protecting the Tisa river and ground waters is an important focus of the Project. Safer landfill (Yanoshi) will reduce the leakage of pollutant materials into ground water and rivers. The arranging of selective waste collection points (SWCPs) in Zakarpattia Oblast, Berehove Raion (UA), the establishments of mobile plants for sorting waste, in catchment area of rivers (UA will all decrease the environmental risk in the target area.

SO 3 Successful protection and sustainable use of common natural values with demolishing the effects of borders on habitats and increasing the awareness of people living in the area. Awareness raising campaigns for children, stakeholders of Tisza-Rika area and ‘opinion leaders’ in the target area will have mid- and long-term effect on the natural resources of the target area, by developing environmentally conscious lifestyles.
